The Ernie Van Leeuwen Memorial Run" was renamed from LA County Run for Health (Formally known as Girls At Risk) in 2007 to honor the life of the famous Southern Californian man who ran to better his health and himself throughout his 94 years.  Ernie lived life with an indominable spirit and vitality that inspires people to better themselves.  For a period of 13 years, from 1994 until his death at age 94 in 2007, Ernie Van Leeuwen was the LA Marathon's oldest marathon runner. During this time span he ran 13 Los Angeles Marathons, and numerous 5Ks and 10Ks. Ernie left us with 9 single age American Running Records, 8 of which still stand.  There is a detailed biography of Ernie at  www.journeytomylamarathon.com which also includes information about upcoming documentary movie featuring Ernie directed by Philip Steinman "Nothing would make Ernie prouder than to have the entire Southern California running & walking community get together for a LA County 5K Run for Health.  If he could see all the great organizations behind this event he would absolutely flip out with joy." -Philip Steinman
